Hamstring Pain: Common Causes and Conditions

Hamstring pain tends to start one of two ways. Either it grabs suddenly (mid-sprint, chasing a ball, stretching for a kick) and you pull up on the spot. Or it builds quietly as a deep ache right under the sit bone that you notice most after you've been sitting or driving a while.

Those two feel different because they are different, and they aren't managed the same way.

Start with whichever description below sounds most like yours.

Conditions we see in this region

Hamstring Strain

A pulled or torn muscle at the back of the thigh, usually at speed or in a stretch. Sore to load, and often slow to feel trustworthy again.

Not sure which one fits?

The two sit in the same stretch of muscle and tendon, and the words people use for them overlap a lot. Working out which one you're dealing with is what an assessment is for.

If yours is sport-related, our Sports Physiotherapy team can assess it and build a return-to-sport plan around your real season, not a generic timeline. If neither description matches, head back to the Injury Finder and start from where it hurts.
