Jaw Pain and TMJ: Common Causes

Jaw pain doesn't always start at the dentist. If your jaw aches, clicks, catches when you open wide, or feels tighter by the end of a long day, the first explanation you're offered is usually a dental one, and for a lot of people it ends with a mouthguard.

There's another way to look at it. The jaw is a joint, it's moved by muscles, and it sits directly on top of a neck that carries its own load all day. A physiotherapy assessment looks at that whole picture: how the joint itself is moving, how the muscles around it are behaving, and what your neck and posture are adding to it.

Below is the condition we see in this region. If it sounds like what you're dealing with, start there.

Conditions we treat in the jaw

TMJ Dysfunction

Pain, clicking or restricted opening at the joint just in front of your ear, and the muscle and posture drivers sitting behind it.

Not quite what you're feeling?

Jaw symptoms travel: into the temple, the ear, or down into the neck. If the description above doesn't match, go back to the Injury Finder and start from wherever it hurts instead. The hands-on work we use most across this region is explained on our Manual Therapy page.

And if you'd rather skip the reading and have someone properly assess it, that's a reasonable place to start too.
